Try Something New: Za’atar

September 3, 2009

Za’atar- or zhatar – is a Middle Eastern spice blend of sesame seeds, dried thyme, dried marjoram and sumac. Mixed with a little olive oil and rubbed into cubed meat with wedges of sweet onion, it makes the best kebobs. Although it sounds a little obscure, many local supermarkets stock za’atar or you can definitely find it at any Middle Eastern market. Wrap the beef in pita and top with fresh tomato relish and yogurt sauce and it can easily turn into a feast.
