Meat: A Winter Food

January 4, 2010

Meat-eating is one of the most controversial topics among people who care about food. It is a personal choice. We are not vegetarians, but we do feel in the U.S. we consume too much of it. Meat has a season, just like everything else and is a great cold weather food that helps the body store nutrients. What”s important is to take the time to seek out sources that are raised with respect to the environment, our health and for the well being of the animals.

How to Shop: In the big name stores, try to buy certified organic meats. If organic is not available, look for naturally-raised, but beware, there are no legal definitions for many of the labels and some are just big supermarket schemes. The best way to ensure you are getting good meat is to buy directly from a small farmer (even though it may not be labeled organic, they are likely producing excellent meat) or from a knowledgeable butcher who can answer your questions.
