Ripe Strawberries

June 1, 2009

If you look in the dictionary, the word ripe means suitable, appropriate, matured, full-flavored, or at it’s best. In fruit, it describes that time when the combination of sweetness, juiciness and texture is “just right”. Unlike vegetables that taste best when they are picked young and tender, fruit needs to ripen to really be enjoyed. Now is the time to buy fresh, local strawberries that have not been packed up and transported across the country (because strawberries do not ripen after picking). Note: When picking berries at a patch, leave their caps on and plan to use them soon after picking or buying; fresh berries are highly perishable.
