Garam masala is easy to find is most markets these days. Garam is Indian for “warm” or “hot”, and this blend (masala) of dry-roasted, ground spices (sometimes as many as 12) differs as much as the variations found in Indian cuisine. It can include black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, dried chiles, fennel, mace, nutmeg and other spices.
We love foods that are full of aroma and flavor. This refreshing salad is great before or after a spicy meal, but make sure that the grapefruit is bright, super-fresh and perfectly sweet and juicy.
Serves 2
2 Ruby Red grapefruit, peel, pith and seeds removed, and cut into bite-sized pieces*
6 fresh mint leaves, cut into thin ribbons
1 tsp. garam masala
3 Tbls. extra-virgin olive oil
Pomegranate seeds, to garnish (optional)
Toss all ingredients together and serve.
* Do make sure that all the pith (bitter white parts between skin and fruit) is removed before tossing. Cut the top and bottom off the fruit, stand it up on a flat end, and slice along the outside, removing the white pith as you go and the seeds.
