FRESH the movie

May 26, 2009

FRESH – New Thinking on What We’re Eating, a film by Ana Sofia Joanes, premiered on Tuesday night in Washington, DC to a sold-out crowd. This terrific documentary features 2008 MacArthur Fellow Will Allen of  Growing Power and Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms. Allen is “an urban farmer who is transforming the cultivation, production, and delivery of healthy foods to underserved, urban populations” in Milwaukee. Palatin’s Polyface Farms is a family owned, multi-generational, pasture-based, beyond organic, local-market farm and informational outreach in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Their stories on food, farming and how each of us can make a difference are inspiring, genius and poetic. Interspersed is real video from industrial chicken, pork and cattle farms and the concern of  ”mono-agricultural” farming practices that are so prevalent today.

What do we do?” asked a person in the audience following the show. Joel Salatin’s response, “Just opt out. Buy local, shop the farmers markets and find your own kitchen”.

Note: If you are interested in seeing this movie in your home or would like to show it as part of a community or school screening, DVDs can be purchased from the FRESH website. We give it five stars.
